Gustabo gives us a snap shot of the latest Art Basel: Miami event, with some photos to illustrate the great time he had! 'Art Basel stages the world's premier Modern and contemporary art shows, held annually in Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong. Founded by gallerists in 1970, Art Basel has been a driving force in supporting the role that galleries play in the nurturing of artists, and the development and promotion of visual arts.'

Gustabo says "It's filled with non-stop shows, people, parties, installations, promotions, films and events. It's a paradise for artists and art seekers alike. It has heaping portions of art fair with a sideshow of Electric Circus that has to be seen to be believed. The perfect storm of art, celebrity and commerce. The worlds eyes, ears and purse strings descend on Miami for 5 days and if you have something to show, want to be seen and/or heard, then this is the place !

From the Karl Lagerfeld / Marina Abromovich opening party, Pulse, Scope, PAMM, Jeff Koons, Louis Vuitton's La Maison au Bord de L'eau (at the Raleigh Hotel's beach front), Kanye West, Marilyn Minter and A Rod to the graffiti walls of Wynwood, whew!… to name a few, it was sensory overload!"

An Emmy for Aardvark

Nathan Aardvark played Art Director and Lead Illustrator on this Emmy Award winning title sequence for Starz's 'Da Vinci's Demons.'

Last night's Emmys saw Nathan and the team crowned with the 'Outstanding Main Title Design' award for the show. Talking of the commission, a very proud Nathan says "The job was to create short animated illustrations to go on top of footage from the show. I was supplied with various clips and painstakingly sketched over the top of each frame....frame by frame! In the end I had hundreds of drawings which were then composited later in post production. I tried to keep it close to the classic style of Da Vinci as much as possible."

Another cool feature of the title is the crab cannon; when the music is played backwards the melody is the same. Watch the titles.

Ten of our illustrators were asked by Saatchi and Saatchi to take part in a fantastic subway exhibition in China. Called "Fresh Beginning for Love" the artworks, used large scale are on tour in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou right now with the aim of 'turning common subway stations into colourful art galleries.'

Nippon Paint invited a total of 32 artists and illustrators from around the world to use their environmentally friendly paints to create the 'love' images. Now, the stations are inspiring 'visual feasts' for commuters.

The Global Times says of the event "After touring the three cities, the 32 artworks will be sold at a charity bazaar at the end of this year. All the funds will be used for "Color, Way of Love," the charity platform of Nippon Paint China for Hope Project Schools, and to improve the teaching environment as well as art education.
Nippon Paint hopes that this philanthropic subway exhibition will inspire people who love beauty to look at their surroundings with fresh eyes and to fill their lives with color."

Show Us Your Type, by Garrick Webster

Garrick Webster explores Neue Magazine, which is a new online project inviting illustrators and designers to freestyle on posters dedicated to different cities. 

Anyone with a creative streak is welcome to take part and the best images end up being displayed at the Show us your Type website. The latest incarnation is a series of works about Barcelona. 

“For this edition we really felt Barcelona as a city being reflected through type, especially the influence Gaudi’s work plays in many of the designs,” says Natalie Long, one of the three organisers. “We are really excited about our next city, Berlin.”

Aida Novoa:

Maybe there’s a touch of the Magritte about Aida Novoa’s lines and graphic letter forms. This poster was created this image for the current Neue challenge on Barcelona.

Lisa Rienermann:

Lisa from Berlin shows off her sky typography, based on photos of the sky from the ground in between tall buildings.

Philippe Nicolas:

And the Gaudi influence reigns supreme in this Barcelona poster by Philippe Nicolas, with this mosaic-like graphic of the Sagrada Familia.
