Design Week says: WPP pre-tax profits up 36 per cent

WPP has seen a 36 per cent increase in pre-tax profits in the first half of this year, compared with the first half of 2009.

The group, which owns consultancies including Fitch and The Brand Union, saw pre-tax profits rise from £179.3m to £243.9m in the period and also saw like-for-like revenue grow by 2.5 per cent.
WPP’s branding and identity, healthcare and specialist communications arm saw the lowest growth in like-for-like revenue, at 1.8 per cent. Operations in the United Kingdom saw a 2.8 per cent growth, while in Western Europe like-for-like revenue fell by 0.2 per cent.
A WPP statement says, ‘The results reflect the recovery in the world economy, following the massive fiscal and monetary stimulus in response to the sub-prime, insurance monoline, Lehman Brothers and other elements of the crisis.’
The group says chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell’s prediction of an LUV-shaped recession – L-shaped in Western Europe, U-shaped in the United States and V-shaped in the Bric (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and ‘Next 11’ countries – would now be LVV-shaped, with the US recovering more strongly than anticipated.
However, the WPP statement adds, ‘While politicians, journalists, economists, analysts and investors argue about double-dips, inflation or deflation, the most likely scenario is a slow growth “slog”, particularly in the mature geographical markets and traditional media markets, perhaps with inflation and higher-interest rates in the long term. In some senses, the recovery will not be over for a long time.’

Harry Lyon-Smith of Illustration Ltd comments that it is good to see that the mighty WPP ship is making the right headway and recognises the fortunes of WPP as a parallel to that of illustrationweb.com.

Orthodontics

This gem of an illustration is the brainchild of Kavel Rafferty who was commissioned to do 12 covers for the British Dental Journal.  Kavel’s unique style which has graced the pages of The Times, Time Out and Conde Nast Traveller, was perfect for creating this series of bold, contemporary images, with this one accompanying the August issue.

Nuno On Your Wall

Ever fancied adding some modern day glamour to your apartment? Then feast your eyes upon this incredible image created by fashion’s latest wonder, Nuno Da Costa.

Nuno has recently had this piece licensed by a client in Denmark to make some wallpaper. The result is this simple stunning backdrop to her apartment.

Tromp L'Oeil Corkscrews

This is the inspired result from wildlife artist Andrew Hutchinson having been commissioned to paint panelled doors for "The Feathered Nest", in Nether Westcote.

The country pub took a unique approach in giving their establishment a hint of antique authenticity, Andrew painted tromp l'oeil corkscrews onto the doors, as if they were hanging on nails. It was an unusual commission that Andrew greatly enjoyed and one that enabled him to use a collection of antique corkscrews he had in his possession!
