Gail Armstrong has been working on something slightly different lately for 02 magazine. Used on the July issue cover, Gail had to build a "set" in which a Nokia phone would sit. She says "The random geometric panels and
the shadows they cast, had to work within the cover layout and not detract from
any of the cover text. A challenge for my mathematical skills, but a very
pleasing result." Gail made the paper sculpture from 2 different finishes of paper:
a brushed steel paper in keeping with the finish of the phone, and a pearlised
white paper, to keep the piece looking cool and clinical, but with a little hint
of sparkle in the texture.

Commissioned by Art Editor Russell Fairbrother, the illustration was for a feature on the meeting of Mike Oldfield and Richard Branson and the subsequent success of the 'Tubular Bells' LP back in the 70's. With the album cover being so iconic, the brief was to produce a slightly modern take on the original whilst retaining it's look. Ian says "The magazine has really good production values, lovely print and very well put together with a card wallet enclosing the magazine......this is my fourth wallet cover for them and they are good fun to work for. The Tubular Bells cover was fun to do but I nearly drowned at Morecambe taking photos of the sea!"

60 Years of The Queen
Gail Armstrong produces a glorious cover illustration for the July issue of "Where? London" magazine. The issue celebrates 60 years since The Queen's Coronation and features related events and places of interest to visit around London. Gail's paper sculpture image is inspired by the crown jewels with the crenellations creating a skyline of some of London's notable landmarks. Art Director Tim Benton said of the piece "We were so impressed with Gail's unique craft. She has created a fantastic eye catching illustration for our 'Where?' cover to our exact specifications, whilst still putting a great deal of her own input into the work. She is a true artist...." The "note From the Editor" feature in the magazine also has a short piece with some photos about the making of the image; an added insight into Gail's creations. (If you'd like to see these go our Facebook page).

Guardian Guide
Chris King embraced the opportunity to illustrate the cover for the Guardian Guide last month, featuring Ryan Gosling. It's an illustration he is quite proud of and a striking one too. Chris says "It initially started as a piece about his new film 'Drive' but became more about the actor and his life rather than just focusing on the film (hence the dog/Hollywood star in the “Grand Theft Auto” inspired backdrop). Thanks to Stephen Jenkins (art Director at the Guide) who steered the ship."
