Witches Trees

http://www.illustrationweb.com/SteinarLund

Inspired by a story of witchcraft and murder, Steinar Lund produces this suitably eerie illustration. The tale, set in 1737 in a town in Wiltshire, tells of the death of 130 people and the blame given to four sisters who were subsequently accused of witchcraft. Steinar's illustration and video show the 'Witches Trees', the place where each one was buried after their murder.

Arturo Ui

Steinar Lund works with Feast Creative to produce this illustration for the play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui showing in London now.
After a receiving a photo of the actor Henry Goodman, Steinar set to work creating the body and cat. He says "The actual costume was sent down from Angels The Costumiers which I then modelled myself and photographer Robert Dixon took the reference shots. Robert has a nice big cat that fitted the brief, but alas he was not happy with me holding him.......in the end I used many different references to create the final 'digital' cat".

The brief was to create a group of 'family' ice lollies with a frosty background for the June issue, Steinar says "I had to experiment with various characters to get the right family look despite a tight deadline."  Art Director Mat Wiggins said of the result; "This looks great ...! I really like the melting bit."

Mega Sandwich

Steinar Lund's stomach must have rumbled when he created this 'mega sandwich' for The Mail on Sunday at the end of last month.  Used in the newspaper's 'Live Magazine', the image was to show the top fillings for sandwiches in the UK. Steinar says "I photographed all the various fillings separately, a few bread slices then compiled them in Photoshop. The client wanted an illustrated look so I went over the artwork with a digital brush to get the desired effect." Mmmmm...

Cloudspotting for Beginners

'Cloudspotting for Beginners' is an illustration completed by Steinar Lund for Country Life Magazine. Published last month, the piece is for an article on the types of cloud we generally see in the UK, Steinar says "I often walk in the English countryside at weekends and take photographs, including clouds. Consequently I had a lot of cloud photographs which helped in doing the image. Although I was not previously aware of the technical names of clouds, I can now impress/bore my friends by pointing what type of clouds are above our heads!"

Soft Flora

This very sunny image from Steinar Lund has been produced for a Norwegian food company. The illustration is now being used as packaging for Soft Flora margarine, and appears on their website. Steinar says "The landscape was a composite of many photographs with various degrees of manipulation. The flower was based on a photograph, but extensively manipulated to create the right shape, then totally painted over digitally to give an airbrushed look." The commission was via DesignHouse in Norway for Norwegian Food producer Mills.

I Could Be an Angel

Norwegian born illustrator Steinar Lund works along side international music and portrait photographer Perou, on The Eighties Matchbox B Line Disaster's new single and upcoming album. The collaboration between photographer and illustrator proved very inspiring for both sides. Perou celebrates individualism with a unique perspective on the world and Steinar relished the opportunity to explore a more surreal & gothic side to his illustrations. The single 'I Could Have Been An Angle' is out already and the album 'The Royal Society' is out in October.

Pinch An Inch

Deceiving no-one with his eating habits is Steinar Lund and his sticky new book cover for "Cook Yourself Thin".
The book coincides with a new television series on Channel 4 of the same name, and was commissioned by Alex Smith of Smith and Gilmour Ltd. Says Steinar: "There was much scrutiny of cupcakes and chocolate muffins to get the right shape, and many visits to a local cake shop. Some cakes had to be consumed in the name of research."
