The Sunday Times Magazine's Nude Feature

Published at the end 2012, The Sunday Times Magazine included an interesting feature on the fundamentals of drawing. Going back to the 'ancient artistic discipline' of life drawing involving artists such as our own Michael Frith, Emma Sergeant, Gerald Scarfe and organiser AA Gill, the article talks of the need to study the human form and to draw not only what you see but what you feel. AA Gill says ‘Artists who don’t practise the craft of their art, or who hand it to someone else, are missing out on what is right at the heart, the great joy of making anything. You shouldn’t just be a director of art.’ I’m sure most of you will agree.

Michael Frith

It’s a vintage year for the talents of Michael Frith who is pleased to have his Sunday Times contract to produce portraits for the Profile page renewed.

In addition, Michael is having an open studio in September, an exhibition in The French House in London’s Soho towards the year’s end, as well as working on a multi media portrait project with a view to exhibit at The National Portrait Gallery. Not to mention the on-going promotion of his book ‘Yacht'.

Frith and Glenfiddich

Michael Frith has just completed a fantastic portrait scene with Presky Maves for Glenfiddich. This combination of unlikely companions (including Picasso and Fidel Castro), relaxing with some of the finest whisky was the perfect job for Michael, having been commissioned to do hundreds of portraits throughout his career. Used as a Direct Mail piece this illustration was commissioned by Kevin Reece; Art Director at Presky Maves and is being sent out as we speak!

Frith Has Flair

Frith's In The Woods

Michael Frith’s work will be familiar to many of us, having graced Fleet Street for many years as designer, illustrator and reportage artist. His work for the Sunday Times restaurant columns and food pages are especially well known, and his portraiture has been featured in most national newspapers. The National Portrait Gallery also hold Michael’s portrait of Robert Maxwell in their permanent collection. Michael has always painted a variety of subject matter with enviable ease: from seascapes and marine paintings, to food studies and portraiture, and this ease can be seen at his present exhibition of watercolours and drawings running at West Stoke House, near Chichester until Sept 3rd. Yacht

The unsurpassed talents of Michael Frith are seeing publication in 'YACHT' a book published by Spot Red Publishing, and due out in November. 'YACHT' is a luxurious hand-bound limited edition book that includes 40 paintings by Michael plus text and sketches. Boating is an obvious passion of Michael's which shines through in this beautiful crafted book.

Busier-than-ever is watercolour king Michael Frith, who has just landed a weekly spot supplying profile portraits for The Sunday Times — as seen here with this study of actor Ben Wishaw.

Other projects currently consuming Michael include a new post card project, as well as his "Big Heads" project—"larger than life portraits with a multi-media approach". Meanwhile promotion for his acclaimed book "Yacht" continues.
